Could we actually survive in an equal world?

posted by admin in 1

Now, it may just be my so-called posh-bird-streak showing through, but I have a horrible feeling that the answer to the title of this article is a whopping great NO.

Imagine walking down the street and seeing this:

Everyone is the same. Similar clothes, nothing flashy. You never see anyone who looks upper class or lower class – everyone, no matter who they are and what colour they are, is equal. Even the sound of feet on pavement is the same all over the world. You can walk for miles and see nobody who has that spark of energy that comes with arrogance of despair.

Say you’re buying horse insurance – come on, I’m a posh bird, so this is my dream! – and when you call up the insurance company the girl on the other end of the line sounds like you. The same equality woes, the same old thing that you wake up with every day. Would that really be interesting? Probably not but it would be fairer, and fairer would surely be better for mankind?

I also know for a fact that many people just don’t want it fair…

Work from home – away from home

posted by admin in 1

I’ve been discovering recently just how difficult it is to get a website business off the ground when you still have to work at a full time job in order to pay the bills. I’m caught in a vicious circle, really, if I go part-time and the website work doesn’t come in, I’ll end up even further in debt, but at the moment I’m having to turn down assignments because there aren’t enough hours in the day. I don’t want to quit my job altogether, as it provides a nice little security blanket in a very uncertain world, but part-time hours would allow me to take on more work. What I need is another job (hear me out) that would allow me to earn some extra cash when the website business is slow. I’d been unable to come up with anything suitable, until my friend suggested working as a UK courier.

The hunt for unique jobs

posted by admin in 1

Many people out there have unique jobs – jobs which are a bit different to the run-of-the-mill office jobs which many of us spend our lives working away at. In the field of Biomedical Jobs for example, there are literally dozens of professions. You’d never know it from the title, but someone in this field might be an expert on one of the following things: blood transfusion, histology, immunology and cytology.

Fortunately, though, the hunt for such jobs need not always be complicated! There are dozens of job portals on the internet which can help you out. Trust me, I am a posh bird who has made it her business to know here stuff!

Facebook is the dominant force in social networking, we all know that, so why not take full advantage of it?

But that’s not to say that you can’t take a different approach to job hunting. Here are a few tips and hints and ways of doing things which you might want to consider:

1) Get business cards printed: it’s very simple and you never know who you might meet, right? Exactly! You never know what situation is around the corner, so be sure to take your business cards with you at all times. It may just lead to a great new opportunity.

2) Leave an ad on Gumtree: Gumtree is so big and vast now that, if you’re willing to take a chance, you can find almost anything on there. Don’t be left out! It’s free after all.

3) Facebook pages: Facebook is the dominant force in social networking, we all know that, so why not take full advantage of it? Biomedical work, like anything, will be there somewhere. Don’t be left behind; embrace technology. You have no reason to fear it!

4) Join a few agencies and let them find a job for you: many people, for some odd reason, are against this. Well, here’s the truth: joining an agency might be the best thing you ever decide to do. It will not only get you much greater reach, but it’ll enable you to pick and choose from a range of jobs, including many which you’d likely never have found by just looking on your own.

5) Need some Sun? Looking to cut ties with the UK for a while? Great! Then what’s to stop you from looking for jobs in different countries you have always wanted to visit? Nothing, especially now that the internet joins up all the dots so quickly and easily.

Email obsession: get over it

posted by admin in 1

I feel ridiculous admitting it, but it’s the truth: I used to be obsessed with checking my emails. I’d check them 20 or more times a day, often for no real reason. Why did I do this? It’s hard to say, but I’d say it was a habit which became conditioning. After all, isn’t that how anyone gets obsessed with anything?

It all began when I started working for myself. My job: to write for other people. Blog posts mainly, and also articles. One of my clients was a manufacturer of bespoke three piece suits . I loved the job and the flexibility it brought, but one of the biggest issues with it was the fact that I had to check my emails to see if she had contacted me…

Now, it all started fairly innocently. I’d check my email in the morning, then at lunch, then in the evening. But after a while I started to have less time to respond to emails. For example, she would want to know something and expect it right away and if I didn’t reply, I got the impression she was annoyed by it. So I started to check my email more. In fact I always had it open on my Desktop in case one came in.

I decided to stop checking emails first thing in the morning

Then, about 6 months later when she was on holiday, I realised perhaps for the first time that I had a problem. I was checking my email very late at night and also when she was away on holiday! At this point I decided to do something about it. Googling the issue, I found I by far wasn’t the only person with this problem.

How did I solve it? With difficulty is how. To begin with I had a false start, and then I decided to stop checking emails first thing in the morning (because it made me want to reply to the emails right away, which meant it ate into my work time). After a while, though, the new routine became second nature and I was away. And I’ll tell you something, friend: I was glad for it. It changed my life and freed up time I had no idea I even had. Brilliant!

Of course, some people get more addicted than others. It’s just their nature. But where there is a will there’s a way, so always remember that. You’re in control, not Google!

Joy of rambling

posted by admin in 1

Wild nature, sights, sounds, smells – the hum of crickets hidden in the grass rubbing their legs together. The stench of boggy wet mud and the smell of bushes after heavy rain. Seriously: who couldn’t possibly like this?

My 14 year-old self, is who. I hated all this. Every Sunday as a child my family forced me to go out walking with them. Our mission: enjoy ourselves as a family all together. Our objective? To bond and become more closely knit.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my family, but back then so much was in our way. Resting idly between me and them were hormones, a chasm of misunderstanding and my love of anything they hated. So, when they despised the 4×4 cars that drove along the track at the top of our road, I adored them. And when boy racers put their foot down through our village – paying no attention to the speed limit – I loved that too!

actually, although mum wouldn’t admit it, she had been the stereotypical rebellious teenager too!

And I just didn’t get the thrill of walking about in the countryside — could not, for the life of me, see the point in it. Not for a good few years. Then, when I was 17 it suddenly struck me and I knew what I had been missing out on.

To begin with I was sad I had missed out on years of tramping through the undergrowth with my folks and brothers and sisters. Sad I had been a misery and caused heartache to my dad in particular when I refused to don my walking boots. Annoyed with myself for upsetting mum when I wouldn’t wear the kagool rain-mac thing which we had all been bought. But then my dad explained to me that he had, in fact, been the same way. He had hated walking as a child, and actually, although mum wouldn’t admit it, she had been the stereotypical rebellious teenager too!

So I don’t feel so bad now, not really. I know that actually, really, I was just doing what genetics told me. And now that I know that I feel content in the knowledge that I was doing the right thing.

I wonder if I will be as patient as my parents when I have children one day and they are as much of a pain to me as I was to mine?

Somehow I doubt very much that I could ever be as patient. But I tell you one thing: I am going to try…

I Don’t Drive

posted by admin in 1

Moving house is, objectively speaking, one of the most difficult things in life. In the last five years I have moved house six times. For some people this is easier than others. If you have your own car or a driving license, you don’t have to rely on the ’kindness of strangers’. I have tried moving so many different ways; asking friends for help; not asking anybody for help; and hiring love. After a particularly awful experience when a friend More

Seaside Retreat

Life in the city can be monotonous and boring at times. During the summer it also gets pretty smoggy and the heat can be unbearable when using public transport. As the weather heated up this week I heard the seaside calling me.I have always had a love for the British coast and in particular, the coast around the south west. I packed up the car on Friday and headed down to Looe in Cornwall. Cornwall itself is captivating, the countryside More

Ladies

I went to go see my friend run an old female 10K race last week. It was a completely inspiring event. The women who were running came in all shapes, sizes and ages and were running to raise funds for everything from cancer research to cheap flights to the Arctic. The one thing that I could not handle, though, was the man who was acting as the host slash master of ceremonies kept referring to the runners as ladies. As More

The other day was disastrous: everything was going fine and smooth until the internet in the office broke down. This made the following events take place:

1) Malcolm, who is easily stressed, got more stressed. This made..

2) June, his side-kick and secret love interest all uppity and red and she was useless and that only made it worse because we have to communicate for me to be able to do my flipping job.
