Essential Goodness of Essential Oils

Essential Goodness of Essential Oils

Essential oils are essentially not oils. They are plant extracts, which are generally not soluble in water. The one important thing to remember is that essential oils are to be used as additives to any product you use.

Essential oils have an odour and therein lies their significance. The fragrances have important therapeutic and cosmetic value and are therefore used as flavouring agents and perfumes. They are prepared by fragrance extraction techniques. Distillation, cold pressing and maceration are some of the techniques used.

Packed with medicinal goodness, oils like eucalyptus are widely used in making medicines for the common cold, though it was originally used as a germicide.

Asafoetida and bay, even basil, an integral part of Asian cooking, also have medicinal properties. The oil pressed out from caraway seeds, which are a common ingredient in bakery foods, is an ingredient of mouthwashes and toothpastes.

The list is endless. What one needs to remember is that essential oils can be used as prophylactics against ailments common in the winter months. For instance, at the onset of a cold, you could inhale steam with a few drops of eucalyptus oil in it. Citronella, too, though usually used as an insect repellent, can help treat colds and coughs. Or essential rosemary oil could be added to your regular moisturiser for soothing muscles and aches. Lavender oil in bathwater or sometimes even a direct application is known to calm the nerves as well. Mustard oil is traditionally used in many cultures as an emollient and disinfectant. Although it has a strong not very pleasant smell, it is excellent for the skin in harsh winters.

Investing in carefully selected essential oils, preferably under the guidance of someone who knows, enhances the value of both kitchen shelf and your personal cosmetic shelf. Fight this winter by cooking right and treating yourself right!
